How is Oud made?

Oud oil, in some forms, has been produced for thousands of years. As can be expected from a resource which has been cultivated for this much time, the process has generally changed. At Jalali Agarwood, we see the importance in preserving the ancient techniques and methods that have been passed down through the generations.

To us, the value of Oud oil lies in more than its rarity, rich scent and transitional qualities from skincare to medicine, but also in its power to transcend the ages. Considering this, we believe that it would be a disservice to those that produced Oud oil in times gone by to not hold true to their methods.

Rich in History

Each stage of the production process is steeped in rich history, from the very location that starts the journey of each of our products. The Sylhet forests of Bangladesh have been the home of the Jalali family for many generations, who began cultivating Oud oil over 400 years ago.

To this day our plantations maintain the rich forests of Agarwood which are preserved in unison with our culture and values. These forests were here far before our ancestors began their craft and it is our aim, through pioneering sustainable principles, that they jewel the verdant countryside for many generations to come. The age-old technique we use to cultivate our Agarwood involves studding the bark with iron nails, we then allow nature to do the rest.

Steeped in Community Values

Working alongside the community of Sylhet, artisans with knowledge of the Agarwood tree that you can’t find in a book, spread by word-of-mouth between families, select the prime trees for extraction. These trees, once they have reached maturity, are taken from the forest and split to reveal the rich, unmistakable, golden hue of Oud oil resin.

Each time this is done brings delight to workers that endear their craft. The perhaps most arduous process then begins of removing the Oud wood using primary tools. This process is painstakingly slow, ensuring each slither of Oud-rich wood is maintained. In the most rare circumstances large sections of Oud are uncovered by these master artisans.

How is Oud is made at our Master Oud Distillery

The wooden chips, rich with the Oud resin, continue their journey, firstly soaked in water for a number of days. Our master distillers are renowned across the world for their quality and skill. The Oud chips are maintained over a hand-fed fire for 9 days, constantly monitored as the oil seeps from within. The resulting oil is then steadily accumulated drip by drip. Finally it is separated in the traditional way, by hand.

What separates Oud oil by Jalali Agarwood from other manufacturers is the experience of our distillers. Master Distillers work to produce a form of oil which is unique and has its own very special character. This is the reason our partners consider us to have the very best Oud in the world.
